How to Be a Feminist: A - D

The ABCD's of Feminism

J Gorman
The word feminist has recently received a dirty rap. But every feminist knows that this is unprecedented. We understand that there are people who oppose our views and who will lash out accordingly.

The best part about feminism is its broad capacity of awareness -- every individual feminist holds a unique perspective. Everyone offers something distinctive to the group as a whole.

However, there are core attributes that link us all together. This guide is intended to serve as an introduction to those similar perceptions.

Aptitude for Learning

The atmosphere of feminism is one that is conducive to learning and understanding. But be careful not to presume this to indicate a passive environment. Every feminist contributes and every feminist absorbs.

Active learning is the most rewarding because it allows direct relation between the inhabitants. If we are able to take information and conform it as it applies to us individually, it will be easier to appreciate. And then to ultimately remember.

Broad Subject Matter

Regardless of your interests or personal connections, there is a platform for discussion within feminism. The reason for this is the fact that feminism has its base in gender relations and roles within society. Because we have all been raised in this society, we are all affected by the issues it holds.

Taking this one step further, all of the issues affect us. They relate to each other when they exist simultaneously, and because we live in a patriarchal society, they also relate to feminism. It is highly unlike that one would initiate conversation on a topic only to find no others offering their respective positions.

Consciousness

The first step in developing an opinion is to become aware of the issue. As mentioned above, because of the broad range of topics, feminism does not allow any concern to go unnoticed. Individual people, however, may not be aware of a particular concern. By engaging in feminist talks, everyone is able to enlighten themselves on the fears and feelings of others. We help each other by allowing ourselves to first become aware of and then ultimate become connected to the problems.

Don't allow criticisms to dishearten you from following your instincts about the issues. Feminism is controversial, but that doesn't mean it is inherently evil. One of the centers of feminist foundation is to contrast the popular belief that women are supposed to be quiet. We have found a platform on which to discuss ourselves, and it is important that we take part and not lose this right.

Debate Potential

It is widely known that even in feminism, there are opposing viewpoints. And unfortunately, this is one of the criticisms others hold. Don't the members of every political group hold multiple stances? This isn't something that should dissuade you. Rather, it should encourage you to offer your own opinions.

The best institutions are those which encompass varying beliefs. This is because only through opposition can one fully understand a subject as it applies to people of all backgrounds. If no one was around to contest your viewpoint and [keywords] make you think, then you wouldn't. Further, there would be no room to grow personally.
