How Do I Figure My Clout on Yahoo! Voices?

Yahoo! Voices Clout Badge Explained

Marie Anne St. Jean

If you write for Yahoo! Contributor Network, you are familiar with the term "Clout." But do you know what Clout means, how it is calculated, and what effect it has on your earnings?

All writers on Yahoo! Contributor Network have a Clout badge, the little planet that shows up on their profile with a number in it, and we all start at Clout 1. You advance in Clout when your page views (PVs) increase, and when you are published on Yahoo! Voices. PVs for Clout are figured differently than the number of page views you see on your profile, since you get a 1% bonus in PVs for each article you write, up to a maximum of 200 articles (200%).

Example: If you have 1000 total PVs on Yahoo! Voices and have written 15 articles, your page views for clout level will be 1150. You have the original 1000 PVs you earned, plus .15 times that 1000 PVs, giving you a bonus 150 page views, for a total of 1150 page views for clout level. You can also figure it by multiplying the 1000 PVs by 1.15 to get the same result of 1150 PVs.

If you have 200 or more articles and have reached the maximum bonus of 200%, then the number of total PVs on your profile can be multiplied by 3 to reach your total page views for Clout.

Example: If you've written 205 articles and you have accumulated 3,500 PVs, you would multiply 3,500 x 3 for a total of 10,500 page views towards Clout.

Why is Clout important? Clout level is one way to measure success on Yahoo! Voices. It's safe to say that contributors who have reached Clout 10 know the ropes and have learned how to make Yahoo! Voices work for them.

Clout is also important as it affects the amount of earnings you will receive on Yahoo! Voices. If you are Clout 1-6, you will receive the current rate of $1.50 per 1000 total page views per month of all of your published articles. Starting with Clout 7, you get a small pay raise with each increment until Clout 10, which is currently the highest Clout attainable on Yahoo! Voices.

You can see the amount of PVs needed for each Clout level, and the amounts paid for each increment by clicking the planet on your own profile page, or by clicking here. With a $ .50 jump in pay from Clouts 1-6, Clout Level 10 currently pays $2.00 per 1000 page views per month.

Thank you, this helped a lot. I was unaware that you got a bonus for the number of articles you wrote. I appreciate this article :)

Will respond privately as well, but no, the PVs for articles on the Yahoo side do not count towards clout level.

Great article, but I have a question. Does the content that gets published on sites like Yahoo Sports help your clout? I've had two published over there, but none of them have effected my clout.

Thanks, this helps me understand the percentage bonus better.

Thanks Marie, I learn so much from your comments and articles. Since having my first article approved on Oct 28, 2010 - I wondered how long it would take me to get to the various Clout Levels. I noticed today this morning that my Clout level is 3, but I didn't hit 500 according to my account, however I do have 12 articles posted so maybe that's what boosted it up. I wish I could see the PVs throughout the day, but I notice they are not updated until the next day. I'm enjoying writing for AC and all of the help from the community and writers like yourself.

Thanks so much for this helpful article. I was a little confused on the whole clout thing. Now, it is crystal clear. I also didn't know that we earn page views for each submission. That is incentive in and of itself to write more! :)

Thanks, I couldn't remember which level the pay changes!

Informative article, Marie Anne. I had read somewhere else that if you had 200 articles before you had 333,334 PVs you would reach Clout 10, so this has been my goal. Applying your formula it would be 3*333,334=1,000,002. BUT, if I am only on track to have 127,500 at 200 articles. THEREFORE, 3*127,500=382,500 for Clout 8 (Which is where I am now with 100 articles and 67,000 pvs). So, I'm not sure I've got it figured out yet. I only worry about it when I read an article reminding me how important it is!
