Here's how it works: once you have completely exhausted your first 26 weeks of benefits, you will need to wait for a letter in the mail from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (DLLR). This letter will most likely show up the week you receive your last unemployment check, but it may not show up until the week after, so be patient. You cannot file for EUC benefits until this letter arrives. Once you get the EUC letter, you will need to call a local unemployment office to file your Emergency Unemployment Compensation claim. EUC claims can not be processed over the internet like initial claims can. Which Maryland county you live in will determine which number you need to call, so be sure to find the number that corresponds with where you live.
Your EUC claim must be filed within 10 days of receiving your EUC letter, so be sure to act quickly. Maryland unemployment offices are experiencing a record volume of calls, so be prepared to call several times before you actually get through to someone. Once you do finally reach a live person at the Maryland unemployment office, tell them you are calling to file for EUC benefits. The operator will verify your contact information and work status and let you know if you are eligible to receive emergency unemployment benefits. If you had been receiving paper checks from the DLLR, you will be issued a debit card that will be used to receive your EUC payments. If you already had a Maryland unemployment debit card, you will use the same card to receive your EUC payments.
An Emergency Unemployment Compensation claim may require information to be verified with your former employer, so be prepared to go a week or two without getting any money from the unemployment office. Once the claim is verified, you will be paid for any back weeks of benefits you are owed. Currently, the state of Maryland offers 33 weeks of EUC benefits, which will hopefully give you enough extra time to find a new job. My 26 weeks of Unemployment are up the first week of April 2010. Am I even eligible for an extension, or do I have to wait for this new vote for emergency funds they are voting on by 2/28? Should I receive a letter for the extension? Unemployment office doesn't answer the phone in Maryland!
I know the EUC lettet that you receive says to respond within fourteen days of the letter date to avoid a break in you claim status. I just received mine on the tenth of February, even though it was dated the first of February. That only gave me five days to respond including the holiday weekend which would actually make it two days. I called on the eleventh but they were closed due to weather and on friday the twelvth I couldn't get through and they closed early. Will I still be able to get my EUC? I feel that if I should be able to since it was pretty much out of my hands.
I recently exhausted my 26 weeks of regular benefits in Maryland on Dec. 26, 2009. I called up to apply for EUC, but they told me that I'm not eligible because I worked in Virgina in 2009. Therefore, I must apply for regular benefits in VA. That is so wrong and unfair. I only worked in VA in 2009 for 6 weeks, so i won't be getting much benefits from them. I was planning on getting 47 weeeks of EUC from MD but now I'm stuck with VA benefits with very little benefit. Does anyone know what I can do about this?
Ginger I would not wait until i get a letter from them as they asked. I waited 3 weeks and did'nt hear anything so I called and called until someone answered the phone and I told them I need to file for the extention and she took my info and started my extention. Call dont't wait.
My 26 weeks ended on 10/31/09. It has been 5 weeks and I still have not received the letter. I am in dire need for the EUC. I am completely out of several medications and need to pay my Cobra. I have made several calls and sent emails, but the only response I am getting is to wait for the letter. I think that 5 weeks should have been ample time. Any advice?
Did you ever receive your extension my Maryland unemeployment benefits ended two weeks ago and I have not receivd a letter yet.
