How to Get Your Files in Order Before the End of the Year

Mrs. Renee

The end of the year 2011, is right around the corner. Before you know it the new year will be here, and you will have an entire different load of paper work to file away. The best thing to do is organize your files before the end of the year, especially papers that you will need for tax season. Below are a few ideas on how you you can get started with your end of the year organization.

Get it organized

Even though many families have chosen to go paperless, we still tend to accumulate a ton of papers in the course of one year. The first thing you will want to do is purchase several file folders. Hanging folders work great if you have a safe, or a drawer to keep important papers in. You will want to separate your papers into different categories. For example any medical papers should be placed in one file. Each person in the family should have their own file for their medical expenses. You can have another file for your credit card expenses, and any other bills, or paper work you may have. Receipts should also be saved for tax season. You can place them in a envelope and then file them away with the rest of your papers. Once you have separated your papers into piles and then into folders, this will start to look a bit more organized.

Binder filing system

Using a binder to file away your papers is also a good way to organize. You can separate the different items using page dividers. Just be sure to label each section, so that you can easily find the papers when you need them. The binders can easily be stored away on a book shelf. This is a good option if you do not have a drawer to place your files in.

A little time each week

Taking a little time each week to work on organizing your files will certainly help you to get it done before the end of the year arrives. Some have found that dedicating an hour a week, or a half hour every other day helps. This way you can make progress on your files without feeling overwhelmed, or overloaded with work.

Don't wait to file

While you are in the process of organizing your papers, you can expect more additional papers to come into the house. As they come into the house take the time to organize them. Don't wait and let them pile up. Instead focus on getting them done instantly. This way you will not be working on an endless pile.
