How to Fill Out a Self Appraisal Form

Ever since most of the organizations have opted the performance appraisal procedure to access the capabilities of their employees, It has become essential to understand the process and make yourself prepared for to adopt this latest procedure of appraisal. In simple words, it is a method of proving yourself how good you are and valuable to an organization in which you are working in order to get better share of amount allocated for you.

When it comes to fill this complicated form, people many times wonder as how to fill this form or what to write in this form. Proper guidelines are provided by the Human Resource Department. The form has some questions and one need to fill the form in best possible way. In our day to day working life, we conduct the duties the way they have been taught to us by the seniors or an experienced supervisors to whom we report. However, doing your day to job sincerely would not make any difference to your appraisal. We all are paid for the same. If we do not work as per the requirement of the management, we may loose job. Now days, our salaries are linked up with the performance and hence we need to perform better and better. Apart from fixed salary per month, there is this Performance Allowance which is based purely on your performance. If you fail to perform, you not only loose this performance related payment but it may also cost your job. Once you perform better, it is essential to bring it to the notice of your supervisor or the person to whom you report. This is where the self appraisal comes in to the picture.

Many organizations conduct appraisal on quarterly basis. A printed form is all you need to fill with giving proper answers to asked questions. Many organization ask their employees to fill this form on line and submit to their supervisors or to departmental heads depending on the structure of the organization. When we start filling the form. we tend to ignore so many things. Before filling the form, read entire form carefully. Take a hard copy of the form which would be easy to glance. Find out what is the last date to submit the form. This would enable you to assess yourself carefully and make a note of every little details.

Once you are prepared with your own assessment home work, start writing your own appraisal. List carefully those targets which were achieved in time. If any extra efforts were made to achieve these targets, mention those efforts. There could be some targets left to be achieved. List those targets by giving the true reason as why they were not achieved. Do not create a false picture of yours in your appraisal form or you would be landing yourself in trouble at the time of review, face to face. Do not forget to mention if there was any technical problem for achieving targets. If the computer system on which you work was down for several days, or if there was some other problem which was beyond your control, mention it with the dates if you remember or have noted down.

If you need any training which you think will enhance your performance, please mention it so. If you see any flaw in existing system, which you think, affects your performance, mention that thing taking every thing in consideration. If you have any better ideas which you think can upgrade the performance, please provide this information. Don't forget that whatever you write will be viewed closely at the time of review. Be realistic with your views and ideas. Once you are complete with the form, read it carefully each sentence, spelling etc. Then submit the form. Take a copy of the same and keep it with you for your refrerence if the need be.

On the day when you will be called for a review, take a close look at the form which you had submitted. This would keep yourself updated for the review. Appear with full confidence for the review. Your supervisor or departmental head is sitting with the form which you had submitted to them. There could be some points which they may not agree with what you have written in the form. Let them finish when they talk. Do not interrupt them. Explain all the points when your turn will come. Explain each point with using proper words and to the point. Do not exaggerate any point be maximum realistic with your views. If you have any further suggestion, please make them so with prior permission.

It is your career and you need to take maximum care for the same. Try to perform better and better every year. Learn new techniques. Update your knowledge. Be a smart worker than just a hard worker. Best of luck !
