How to Find the Best Hiking Boots

What Are Some Good Brands of Boots

Tosha Watson
If you are an avid hiker or backpacker, you know that you will need a good pair of boots. Since there are so many imitations out there, it can become confusing. If you have never bought a pair of hiking boots, then you should go to an outdoor shopping center. They have more knowledge about boots than most regular shoe stores do. While it may seem like you are paying more for a pair of boot, it will pay off in the long run.

Never buy your first pair of hiking boots from some off the wall sales person. If the sales person seems too eager to sell you a pair of boots, you will need to look for someone who will spend the time to discuss the different features of the boots.

Here are a few things to look for when buying hiking boots.

  • The Deeper the tread, the better the traction will be.
  • A good pair of hiking boots will come above your ankle; this will provide extra support so you don't twist your ankle.
  • Look for boots that have soft, wide, thick scree collar the thicker the padding, the less chance you have of chafing your ankle.
  • If you plan on crossing any streams or rivers, you should chose a pair of boots that have a tongue that is attached at least up to the top of the foot,.
  • Hooks for the laces above the top of the foot.
  • Good insulation and padding all around, firm on the bottom, with a tough but smooth lining.
  • Double stitching on all visible seams, this will help to prevent your boot from falling apart if you cut some of the stitching.
  • One of the worst things to buy for hiking is a boot that is made out of suede, or all fabric. A good hiking boot should be made mostly of leather.
One of the biggest things to stay away from when it comes to buying backpacking boots is webbing. Webbing does not hold up well on backpacking trips.
