How to Find Cheap Apartments in New York City

The Outlaw

Finding a cheap apartment in New York City can be quite a challenge. New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the United States and if you are looking for a cheap apartment, especially in Manhattan it can be quite hard. However here are some useful tips and ideas for finding a great bargain for an apartment.

Firstly, if you have a job in one of the five boroughs in New York City, you do not have to limit yourself to Manhattan. You can buy an apartment or rent a place in any of the other boroughs since travel back and forth is cheap and easy. Manhattan has very expensive apartments. The apartments on Manhattan's Upper East Side are very expensive and usually only the wealthy people can afford to live there.

The lower east side contains much cheaper apartments. Usually buildings that do not have a doorman are cheaper than buildings that do. In addition, some studio apartments can be cheap and they are pretty big for studio rooms.
The best way for finding cheap and reasonable apartments in New York City is by looking through the real estate section of any local newspaper. Most people advertise the selling of their apartments through the newspaper or on the internet. When you also hire a real estate broker, he or she can help you find an apartment that is cheap and reasonable.

Another great way of saving money is to buy an apartment that is unfurnished. Furbished apartments come with furniture that can be more expensive that the furniture that you were planning on buying for the apartment. This can add an extra financial burden and increase the price tag of the apartment.

Another great tip is to buy an apartment that has not yet been renovated. Many people renovate their kitchens or living room in their apartment to increase the cost. Renovations to rooms in the apartment vary but it can add around an extra $20,000 to the value of the apartment. While an apartment that has not yet been renovated won't look at nice, it will indeed be cheaper for you to buy.

A great sight to find a cheap apartment is Craigslist.com. Craigslist lists cheap apartments for rent and to buy. Another helpful website that I have found to be useful is cheapapartments.com. This site lists apartments in major cities in the United States. You can search for New York City and find cheap apartments that are listed. The website also gives you contact information of the seller.
