It has been estimated that the average family spends upwards of $500,000 raising a child. That's quite a chunk of cash. Of course you want to give your kids the best, but as the saying goes, "Money can't buy happiness".

Avoid the expensive toy fads. Children's attention spans aren't what they used to be. Why spend up to $100 on a toy that will be collecting dust in a few weeks.

Most people who advertise garage sales, via the newspaper or posted signs, specify if they have a lot of children's items. Hit up these sales and you're sure to find some great stuff.

Ebay is another good place to find toys, but it requires that you do a little more research. Check previous auctions to see what similar toys have sold for, to make sure that you aren't paying more than you should be. Don't bid on the first thing that comes along. A little patience will sometimes save you a lot of cash. As always, be a smart ebayer - check sellers' feedback and read descriptions and instructions carefully before placing your bid.

Another fun option is making your own toys. Whether this is an option for you depends on how crafty/creative you are and how much spare time you have on your hands. Most people underestimate their creative abilities - give it a shot before you rule it out. Look for ideas and patterns online or in parenting magazines. Making your own toys will not only save you money, but will also be a fun project for you and your child to do together. Also, a unique toy that is hand-made has more sentimental value than anything you can buy off the shelf. Your child will appreciate this aspect when they grow older.
