How to Find Your Checking Account Number

Knowing your checking account number is a very important thing to have on hand. You need it to make a payment using an eCheck and transfer money or set up regular bill payments. But what do you do when you lose this piece of important information? You use one of these simple way to get that important number so you can get on with life.

Call or Go into your Bank

There are many banks that will give you your checking account number over the phone after you answer certain security questions. Your checking account number is sensitive information and your bank does not want that information getting into the wrong hand. So if you decide to call your bank to get your information, be ready to answer a few questions about the person you know best.

If you bank will not release that information over the phone, you can always go into your local branch to obtain it. Make sure to bring a valid form of ID so that you can prove you are the owner of the checking account in question. Then simply get your checking account number written down and keep it in a safe place.

Log On

Do you have access to your checking account using an online system? If so you can log onto your account through your banks website and get your checking account number. Typically, when you click on "Checking account" from the main page after you log in, you will be able to see your checking account number listed at the top of the screen. If you cannot find it there. Look at the websites "Help" section and see if you can find out where your checking account number is listed that way.

Look on a Check

Probably one of the easiest and most convenient ways to find your checking account number is to simply look at a check that is linked to the checking account in question. In the bottom left hand corner of the check you will see a long string of numbers grouped together. Disregard the first set of nine numbers, as that is your banks routing number and you probably do not need that. The second set of numbers is your checking account number, plus the checks number. Write this string of number on a piece of paper.

Now, look up at the top right hand corner of your check. You should see a 3 to 4 digit number. This is your check number. Locate that same set of numbers in the number set you just wrote down and mark through it. The remaining numbers are your checking account number.

Once you have found your checking account number through one of the ways listed above, make sure you keep it in a safe place. You do not want your checking account number falling into the wrong hands and possibly draining your bank account. However, if you ever need to find your checking account number again, you will have the knowledge you need to do so.
