How to Find Your Creative Space

You Need a Place to Call Your Own!

Do you have somewhere to call your very own inside your home? Whether you are writing a book, building a computer, or making a scrapbook, it is always nice to have a "creative" space to go to at a moments notice. A space where you can have equipment, materials and motivation all at hand.

First you must choose an actual space. Where is a place you can be most open minded and creative? Do you need a desk tucked away in a private room, or a chair sitting out in the open living room? Wherever you decide upon, make sure it is comfortable and somewhere where you can be provided with the things you're going to need.

Set the ambience yourself. If need be, add candles to soften the mood in the room. Music can also help you set the tone you are looking for. Make sure you have the correct amount of lighting and that you are not straining your eyes to see or blasting your eyes with too much light. Play around with lighting, natural and by way of lamps, and see what works best for you. Remember it is all about remaining comfortable in your space!

Decorate accordingly - add pictures to the walls or abstract art that you find inspiring or relaxing. Make the space your own. Even if you can only use a small space in a room that others use. Use a bookcase or beautiful divider to separate off your section from the rest of the room and then decorate it the way you see fit. You want to make your space as personal, relaxing and private as possible - even if that means throwing a ton of pillows on the floor and snuggling up in them. Do what makes you happy.

Make sure that you organize your space. You don't want to have a creative idea only to lose motivation later because it took you 10 minutes just to find a pen or button or whatever it was you needed. Keep things you know you might need in specific places. Be organized so that you know where everything is and can grab it on a whim. Storage containers work wonders. Get some, of many shapes and sizes. Not only will they provide organization, they will also look a lot less cluttered, thus keeping your space more relaxing.

As you spend more and more time in your space you will discover little things that you may need to change or update. If things are working well, keep them around. If you find there are things that are just taking up space then ditch them. The point of having your space is so that you have exactly what you need at your fingertips and do not have to deal with useless things being around that you don't need. Keep an eye on things each time you enter your space and ask yourself what isn't working at the time. Updating will happen often and that is ok. You want your space to evolve with you.
