Before delivering your resume make sure you are in appropriate attire, you are groomed well from head to toe, and that you glow confidence before entering the doors of any prospective business. You could have everything the employer is looking for in education and work experience, but if you do not have the confidence to go with it than that could be your downfall.
It is also important to make sure your resume is a correct and accurate reflection of you. Your resume is there to represent your skills and qualities and it has to be done right in order to do that. It is always a good idea to have your resume done by professionals who have the experience and the knowledge to do it accurately. A few professional resume writing companies are Resume Edge, Resumes Guaranteed, and Chapman Services. It is also useful to make a portfolio to go along with your resume and place it on the internet for easy access to employers. This can contain writing samples, education, work history, and anything else which could help you stand out against the rest.
The next step is to network. It is important to know people in the field that you wish to be employed in. It is important to get out and meet as many people as you can. You can network on social networking sites and have your friends introduce you to people they know that could help you. It is a fact that knowing the right people can get you the job you want and help you climb the career ladder.
Once you snag the interview for the job you want than it is important to do well in the interview. It is important to get a good night's sleep and to be at least ten to fifteen minutes early. You will need to practice your answers to questions that the employer may ask and these typically include salary expectations, reasons why the employer should hire you, and how would you describe yourself. It is important to already have answers ready for questions in order to make you appear confident and well-prepared. It is also critical to have questions ready to ask the employer and this will make you appear enthusiastic about the job and interested. When the interview is over make sure to thank the employer for his or her time and to shake their hand firmly before letting yourself out.
The final step is to write an effective follow-up letter to your interview which recaps important information, your interest in the position, and to briefly remind the employer of your qualifications. It is important to send this letter at least 24 hours after your interview. If you done all of these tasks than you did everything you could to get the job.
You could do all of these tasks and still not get the job. If the employer doesn't chose you even though you may have been qualified, had a great interview, and than completed a follow-up than maybe there was something the employer found out about you than prevented you from getting the job. In today's society employers are now checking social networking sites and the world wide web to find out information about future employees. It is important to make sure there is not something on your Facebook account or on the internet that may make you look bad to a future employer.
Some other areas to look into would be your background check, credit history, and to check up with your references that you put down and see what they may be telling prospective employers who call them. Employers may also be checking past work history and you may be getting a bad reference from a past job. If you have knowledge that a past employer might be giving you a bad reference than it might be a good idea to take the job off your resume all together. You could put in the blank space that you decided to go back to school during that time, did freelance work, or opened up your own business. Selling Avon on the side or writing online can be considered freelance work.
It is hard to get ahead in today's market with employers having access to everything about you and the overwhelming applicants who are applying for the same jobs. You have to go beyond normal means to get a job right now during the recession our country is facing. If you use the tips mentioned in this article than you could be one step closer to obtaining the career you desire.
