Your First Classic Car

There are a few things to take in to consideration when looking for your first car to restore, in this article I will go through them and help you locate the prefect classic car for you to restore, rather it's a muscle car, or just a good old American classic.

If this is your first restoration you need to consider what you know about restoring a car, evaluate your skills in areas such as mechanical repair; body & paint repair; electrical repair, and last but not least interior repair.

You'll need to determine what you can do and the car, and what you'll need help with, be sure to ask your friends what they know you'd be surprised what some of them may know, and they'll probably be glad to help you.

Once you have determined what you, and your friends have the ability to do on the car you can begin to shop for just the right car, as I have said before if your in a hurry to finish a restoration, don't start one, they take a long time to complete.

When you go out to look for the perfect first car to restore you should take the list of things that you and your friends can do, and be sure to compare it to the cars that your looking at, make sure that you inspect all of the cars carefully before you buy one.

You'll have a lot more fun if you keep most of the work in your realm of knowledge and experience, the more of the work that you and your friends can do, the more fun the project will be for you, obviously you'll have to farm some of the work out.

There will be things that you just can't do, and for those things most professional shops are glad to do partial restoration work, if you need to save money you'll need to farm out the least amount of work that you possibly can.

Another word of caution is to never buy the first car that you find, take some time to look around, chances are you'll find a car that's in better condition, and yes it may cost you a bit more money, but it will save you loads of agony in the end.

Take your time; keep your list close to you; and look at a lot of cars the more cars you look at the better deal you'll find, don't let slick talking salesmen or owners of these car make you think that you'll never find another car like the one their selling.

It's usually not true unless you have happened to come up on a very rare car, in this case you should look at all of the numbers on the car to make sure that the car is what they're telling you it is, if it's a truly rare car, you should ask why they're selling it.

It's up to you to make sure that you don't get ripped off on the purchase of your classic car, and believe me there are people who will take advantage of a lack of knowledge on your part, so read; study; and know all you possibly can before you start to look for your car.

The internet is great resource to help you locate just the car that your looking for, there are a lot of companies with web sites that sell classic cars, they can really help you locate the car your looking for, I will add some of them at the end of this article.

You should do some research in to the companies on the internet yourself also, although I will provide you with a few of them here, the ones that I'll list here I have already studied, and I know them to be reliable companies to deal with.

You should check some out with the BBB, and the local chamber of commerce for the the area that the business is in, the more of them you know the better off you'll be in the end, you will more then likely buy another car after this one, it's nice to know who to trust.
