What you want to do is be able to outthink other job seekers and apply for a job before it is even listed in the classifieds. In order to do this, you have to look through the past classified ads that date a month to three months back. Check the listings for jobs that fit your resumé. There is a high probability that these companies may need another batch of employees that fit your job description, and have not posted any classified ads for it yet. You're just trying to beat them to the punch, and think ahead. It may take some skill to preempt them, but with some practice you can probably use this strategy in order to find a job for yourself easier.
You can even look for online jobs on CareerBuilder® but can only look for past job ads posted a month back. But you can use the follow-up feature since CareerBuilder® gives you a name that you can follow up to.
With other papers you can even go back through the job listings and check through the year. Maybe you can spot trends in these job listings and apply in advance for jobs that aren't even listed. It is all about spotting the trends in the job markets and analyzing data that the newspapers and these online job searches provide. Open your eyes and see what isn't usually seen.
Also read local business papers often as they will be listing hidden job opportunities. If you see a new factory is opening, or a new company has opened in the area and is hiring. Keeping yourself abreast and informed of the developments in business and the employment prospects that come with them can give you the edge you need to find that job before everyone else.
In these hard times, being resourceful and making good use of the information provided by these classified ads is a must, especially if you are looking for a better job. Make use of what is already there, but which others do not usually see.
