Visiting a realtor, can be a similar experience for the beginning house hunter. Unless the realtor knows you and your family personally, they will have many questions to help you find the perfect home. So, while the intentions of the realtor are in your best interest as a new home buyer, it still can become overwhelming.
As a new home buyer, you and your family can make the search process less overwhelming by completing a "wish list" of things you are looking for in your next home. You may find it helpful to have everyone in the family (including children) complete a wish list. Once this is done, sit down together, compare the lists and determine the items which are a priority for all of you. You can use the finalized list to help you select keywords for internet searches and when you meet with your realtor. Listed below, you will find some questions to help you get started searching for a new home.
What price range fits our budget and lifestyle? (It is important to be honest and very realistic about this question when looking for a new home.)
How many bedrooms? (Will children have their own rooms or will they share a room?)
How many bathrooms? (Be sure to think about full bathrooms and partial baths!)
Where do you want to live? Will your new home be in your current community or a new one? What are you and your family looking for in a community?
If you commute to work, how far are you willing to drive? How important is access to a highway?
Are schools an important part of the location of your new home? If so, what are you and your family looking for in a school system?
Are you looking for a newer or older home?
How much renovation are you willing to do? How much renovation can you afford?
Is there a certain "style "of home you are searching for? (For example: ranch or two-story?)
Are you searching for a home with an attached or detached garage? Are you looking for a certain number of stalls? Will t he garage be only for vehicles or will it need to have a work area as well?
What type of yard are you and your family looking for? Does it need a fence?
Do you want to live in town or in the country?
If you want your new home to be in the county - How many acres do you want? Are you ready for the challenges of country living? Will you want your new home to have outbuildings, such as barn?
What are the interior features you seek in a new home? Fireplace? Large kitchen? Finished basement? Hardwood floors?
Be sure to include any other questions which are important to you and your family in finding the perfect new home. You will find taking the time to determine your preferences prior to searching for a new home will make the experience much more manageable and enjoyable for everyone.
