How to Find a House in North Dakota

Kelly Fleming
In today's economy hundreds of people are flocking to North Dakota to find their place in one of the lowest unemployment States in the US. Finding a place can be extremely hard in Western North Dakota. The bakken oil field is booming right now, which means workers from all over the country have come to cash in on this.

With hundreds of people coming to North Dakota daily the housing market is more expensive and extremely competitive. Apartments have waiting lists and house have doubled and even tripled in price. So, unless you have cash in hand or know people you will be relying on plain luck to make a home for yourself here. I have put together some tips to help you find a reasonable place to live in Western North Dakota.

Spend Some Time out Here:

Get familiar with the locals. They know more about where to find empty, vacant house, or even someone that might be willing to sell. Most of the places are by word of mouth; not listed on craigslist or newspapers.

Start Knocking on Doors:

Drive around and look for houses that might be vacant. Take down the address and description of the house. At the Williams County Recorder's office you will be able to look up who the current owners are and possibly get an address or phone number. Do not be afraid to call or write a letter. Most people when they move just kept their houses because the market was not booming. If the receive a letter in the mail offering cash for their house they abandoned there is a good chance they will do this.

I know this method works because this was how I found a house for my Mother and friends. I would get about one response for every five letters sent out. There are so many little towns out in Western North Dakota, with a little hard work you will be able to find a place to live.We only plan on staying out here for ten years, and then we want to go home to Colorado. This oil boom can last many, many years to come. Housing is extremely hard to find. Unless you have pockets full of money you will need to get creative. I was also able to find a few houses that were in our budget on Craigslist, and the newspapers. They will go fast but it is worth a shot.
