How to Find Ideas for Decorating a Child's Room

Lisa Mason
When we moved to a new house, we took it as a great opportunity to redecorate the rooms of our four children. We have two boys and two girls, varying in ages from 2 to 12. Because their ages vary and they do not share bedrooms, we had a big decorating job on our hands.

The first step was to find ideas for decorating their rooms. While it may seem easy- ideas are everywhere- it was actually a more difficult task when you think about what you can do that will last long with the child before they outgrow it but also please them today.

Trends come and go so quickly and kids easily outgrow them so we were looking for something a little more personal. I asked my kids to join in the idea-generating and here are some tips we came up with.

How to find ideas for decorating a child's room:

Collections and interests- What are your child's treasures? Every child loves to be surrounded by the things they love. You can build your child's décor around their interests, collections and treasures. Anything from frogs to pirates to butterflies or science can all be made into themes or focal points for the room.

Artwork- Art is always a great decorating starting point for any room, including children's rooms. You will want your child to be exposed to art as early as possible. Whether it is a painting that you put aside that your child really loves or some of their own original artwork that you can hang in the room, this is always a good start to the décor theme.

Use travel memories- Has your family taken family vacations to places that were special to your children? Does she have a favorite memory of a school field trip or other fun travel memories? These can be a great starting point for décor ideas.

Reminisce on past days- This goes along with the travel memories but it can include any fond memories your children have of their lives or of the family together. This can be a great way to build a room around your child's personality, turning it into something very special she will treasure.

Decorate furniture together- Whether it is hand-me-down furniture or something cheap you picked up at the local retail store, you can decorate the furniture together and customize it to your child's tastes. You can paint, add decals and stickers, stencil or even add gems to customized furniture for your child's room.

Remember, you and your children do not have to settle for a typical home décor theme or a trendy room that they will outgrow. You can create a magical space for your child to escape to any time she chooses, right in your own home.

Great idea, Terry! My daughter's especially love plants but they cannot really take care of real ones.

How about using silk plants as decorations. They are the best things to spice up every dull corner .
