How to Find Inspiration for Song Writing

C.D. Crowder
Writing your own song can be a daunting task. There are so many great songs already out there. Where do they find the inspiration? Look at your favorite bands and see what their muse or inspiration happens to be. The ideas below will help you find inspiration in your everyday life. Enjoy writing the next great song lyrics.

Listen to other songs for inspiration.

See what the popular trend is. Also listen to other eras to see what has been a recurring theme throughout the years. Often times just hearing other songs will spark an idea and even get a few lyrics dancing through your mind.

Love, breakups, friendship, and freedom are always popular.

Look at any CDs you have. Most titles have something to do with love or heartache, or simply how great of a friend someone has been. Country, rap, pop, and rock all have these themes. So no matter what genre you're into these are always great choices.

Write about yourself.

You don't have to actually say any names, but use your own experiences. A recent interview country singer Taylor Swift said she bases her songs around her own life. You've probably been through a break-up or had a crush at some point. You can also look to obstacles you have overcome or fears you have conquered.

Rock band, Flyleaf, bases their music on actually experiences they have had. Drugs were a problem with the lead singer. Some of her songs are about her struggles with her addiction and how hard it was to overcome them. Basically, anything goes.

Movies and shows are full of ideas.

Okay, so maybe your life isn't interesting enough for a song. Not a problem. Watch a movie. Dramas are perfect. Daily soap operas are another ideal location for song ideas. Touching, tragic scenes and the lines used during will help spark your own beautiful lyrics.

One line is enough to create an entire song.

Often times, you will come up with a killer line. No particular theme comes to mind with the line itself, but work with it. Try rhymes or different ways to phrase your lyrics. Before long, you will hit on a theme or story and be well on your way to a completed song.

Put your heart and soul into what you write and sing.

No matter how great the lyrics, the song will flop unless the listener truly believes what is being sung. The entire point of a song is to make the listener feel what you are singing. If you cannot pour your heart and soul into the song, then you should keep trying until you hit on the perfect lyrics and music. After all, music is simply the artistic expression of emotions.

Good luck on writing your next song. Using the tips above, you will finally be able to create a song that is solely and uniquely yours.
