How to Find a Job During a Recession

Taking a Proactive Role

Our economy stinks. The country is in a recession. There are no jobs available. These are just a couple of statements that everyone has heard recently. Unfortunately, they are true. Our country is experiencing one of the worst recessions in history, and we have a long way to go before things get better. For now, there is hope, with fresh blood coming into the Oval Office, breeding new ideas and renewing our faith in the political system our ancestors created all those years ago. While there is no way to make you recession-proof, with a little hard work and determination, you can survive these hard times, and create opportunities for yourself where others say there is none.

You can start with the local paper. The best days to check the classifieds is generally on Sunday. Employers know that this is the most purchased edition of the newspaper, which gives them a larger target audience. A good suggestion is to sit down on Sunday evening, pen and paper in hand, and plot your attack, because job hunting is a lot like war. It is you against them, them being all those other employment seekers after the same openings as you. Make a list of those you need to call, those you need to fax, and those you need go to in person to apply. This way, when Monday morning rolls around, you will be organized and ready to begin the job of job hunting.

Internet employment boards are becoming more and more popular because of the ease and convenience of use. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of listing found here, it will take a lot of time and effort to weed through the illegitimate postings and find a legitimate offer. Remember as well, there will be thousands doing the exact same thing, so if your resume is not top notch, it will be hard to be noticed as one in a million. However, a one in a million chance is better than no chance at all. Reply to all that you feel could be a good fit.

The worst mistake most people make, however, is to sit back and wait for things to come to them. Getting up and getting out the old fashioned way is one of the best ways to get doors to open for you. While sending your resume, or filling out an online application seems to be the wave of the future, and the most convenient way to seek employment, this method discounts the value of genuine face-to-face interactions. If you can sell yourself on a piece of paper, imagine what you could do if you were able to actually speak with another human being. This will also help the employer put a face with the name, making you more memorable.

It is crucial to remember that with our economy being as it is, you must take a proactive role if you expect to find a job. No door will open by itself; you have to turn the knob if you want to be let in. Stay positive, work hard and soon you will get the break you deserve, and possibly the career of your dreams.
