Here are some tips for finding a job in West Virginia. Even during a recession there are jobs, you only have to work harder to find them. While I will provide some standard job search information, the tried and true ways to finding a job in good and bad times is word of mouth or networking. Most jobs are still filled by knowing the right person and being known by the right person. This is where the importance of participating in civic organizations and other groups comes into play. Whether you are active in church, the Lion's Club, Rotary, or a multitude of other groups around the state of West Virginia, knowing people from a wide section of life will keep you in the loop on who is hiring.

While networking into the right circles is the best way to find a job, here are some ways to look for jobs in West Virginia.

Work Force West Virginia provides a great page with links to some of the state's newspapers and other places to search for work here: http://www.wvbep.org/scripts/bep/jobs/worksrch/. To search the State of West Virginia's jobs go to the Division of Personnel's website at http://www.state.wv.us/admin/personnel/. To search for jobs at West Virginia's colleges and universities visit the website Academic 360 which provides links to various human resources offices at colleges and universities across the country. The West Virginia page is found at http://www.academic360.com/hr/hrlisting.cfm?TerID=49. If you are looking for employment with the Department of Education as a teacher, bus driver, or other service jobs visit their website at http://wvde.state.wv.us/jobs/.

One place that is often overlooked is jobs with the federal government in West Virginia. There are a number of federal government jobs in West Virginia. To take a look at the employment options with the federal government in West Virginia visit www.fedjobs.gov. The National Park Service also offers a number of temporary jobs, check these jobs out at www.nps.gov.

Craigslist is a place that many people in West Virginia overlook but it can be a good source of full time employment as well as short term jobs that need workers right away. Craigslist is found at www.craigslist.org.

If you are unable to find a good job it may be time to look for some job training. Coal miners who can work in the modernized mines are in demand as well as nurses and other health related professions. Community colleges and other educational sources have specific courses of study that can help you land a good job quickly without spending years in college.

Thanks for the great resources. I am moving to WV in less than two weeks and switching jobs; I only wish I had read this article sooner!
