Finding good legal jobs in New York City is not as difficult as you may think. Whether you are a lawyer, paralegal, or legal secretary, there are plenty of jobs open at various law firms and agencies throughout the five boroughs. Here is some useful information on how to find legal jobs in New York City.

1. The New York Law Journal is an incredibly valuable source. Check out their website and consider purchasing a subscription at their annual rate. If it helps land you the right job, it will be well worth the cost.

2. Consider working for the City or State. Take a long look at the Legal Aid Society, the District Attorney's Office, the Attorney General's Office, and Corporation Counsel, which represents the City of New York. The experience you'll get at any one of these agencies will be invaluable to your legal career.

3. Consider all five boroughs. For instance, don't dismiss the Bronx and Queens if you live in Brooklyn or Manhattan. The subway connects all four of those boroughs, and Staten Island is just a brief ferry ride away.

4. Network. The old saying, "It's not what you know, it's who you know," isn't any less relevant in the New York legal community. Strike up a conversation with every lawyer you meet. It's difficult to walk into any New York City bar without bumping into a lawyer or two. Trust me, I've tried.

5. If you're not a drinker or can't afford to imbibe, the next best place to find lawyers is at the courthouses. Hang around the hallways while court's in session. Carry a briefcase with you, even if it contains nothing but a blank yellow legal pad. If you're already admitted to the bar of any state, have business cards handy, even if all they contain is your name, home address and telephone number. Shake hands with some attorneys and mention you're looking for work.

6. Don't waste too much time on Craigslist. While I consider Craigslist a valuable resource for most things, many legal recruiters and others that utilize that site will just waste your time. If you do respond to any ads on Craigslist, make sure they are legitimate firms.

7. Always have a kick-ass writing sample available. This can and will make the difference when it comes down to you and that other guy or gal. While you're at it, make sure the information on your resume is accurate and completely up-to-date.
