You can search with most search engines, like Google or Yahoo, by typing in "local haunted houses" along with your zip code. This should bring up a selection of what is available in your area. The majority of listings that you will find should provide links with directions, costs, operating times and type of event or age suitability.
Your local newspaper will also probably have listings of local haunted houses. This information can usually be found in a Sunday printing or weekly "Local Events" section. Local event sections tend to have the most information published on Thursdays or Fridays for weekend planning. A local radio station is also a good choice for finding information. Even if you miss the actual advertisement you can call the station for more information.
Most major theme parks will have haunted Halloween events. Some will have a haunted house while others will have complete theme nights during the month of October. If you are in the vicinity of any major parks you can call, or go on-line, to get information regarding costs and hours of operation.
Check with your local churches or charitable organizations. Many of these will sponsor weekend events as a fund raising effort. Local church and charity events tend to be lower in cost and suitable for all age groups.
If you are in a farming area, check with the local businesses themselves. Larger farms may have weekend events centered on Halloween activities. You may not find an actual haunted house but corn or hay mazes can be equally fun. Hay rides may also be available as well as freshly made apple cider.
Another idea would be to check with your city itself. You might try a general information line for local attractions. Your local YMCA or community center may have a haunted house as well as other Halloween events on their calendar. You can also get very good information by asking friends and neighbors for their recommendations and experiences.
If you would like to actually visit a "true" haunted house in your area a Google or Yahoo search should bring you results. By typing in the words "true" or "real" along with "haunted house" your results will be different than when searching for an event activity. You might also wish to search using the term "paranormal" or "ghost hunters".
Your search for local haunted house events does not need to be frightful. The haunted house you choose can be as frightful or amusing as you decide. Enjoy!
