How to Find the Minus World in Super Mario Brothers

Mario and Luigi Swim with the Fishes in the Minus World

Super Mario Bros., the original, classic Nintendo Entertainment System game pits Italian brothers Mario and Luigi, both plumbers, against the evil King Koopa. In this game, Mario and Luigi must save a beautiful, 8-bit princess, who King Koopa hid in the bowels of his castle. In order to get to the castle, the plucky plumbers must plow through 8 "worlds." If a player wants to put the princess-saving mission on hold, he can take a detour by visiting the "minus" world, a never-ending underwater adventure. Here's how you reach the minus world in Super Mario Brothers.

Find the Minus World in Super Mario Brothers Step 1: Reach the end of World 1-2. This shouldn't be too difficult, considering it's the game's second level-and it's very easy.

Find Super Mario Brothers Minus World Step 2: Locate the pipe that leads you to the end of the world. Stand on this pipe. Break the first two blocks, leaving the one on the right intact. Then, run to the pipe's left end and duck. Jump and while still airborne, move to the right. This allows you to walk through the brick walls and lead you to the warp zone room.

Find Super Mario Brothers Minus World Step 3: Enter the first pipe (this is the pipe located on the far left). This brings you to Minus World -1. The Minus World never ends, so don't go looking for that flagpole; it doesn't exisit. To get out of the Minus World, either lose all of your lives or reset your Nintendo.

Other Super Mario Brothers Minus World Information:
If you're using a game cheat tool (Game Genie, etc) where you can select the level you want to play, the Minus World takes you all the way back to -8. A game cheat tool is the only way to access these levels. It's rumored that these "Worlds" were test levels used by the developers. For example, Minus World -2 is exactly like Level 3-4 with water graphics and World -4 is a blank screen. All of these levels are never-ending, so you'll need to set your gaming tool to the exact Minus World level you want to play.

The minus world is considered an "Easter egg" within the game. This means the game's developers stuck it in the game for players to discover. You can't really do anything in the minus world except swim and avoid the fish. The novelty of it wears off after a while, being that it never ends. It's kind of like those "Endless Pools" devices, except with flesh-eating fish and poisonous plants!

Despite owning an NES while I was growing up, I never tried this. You have to wonder why someone searched for it in the first place!
