The first step is to look around your home and property and make sure that you just haven't overlooked the dog. Dogs love to hide and finding one that feels like not being found can be very difficult, even within a small home. The places that you may find your furry friend could be very surprising. Don't only check the inside of your home; check the outside yard and any other property that you own. Make sure to yell the dog's name loudly or do whatever has attracted your pet in the past.
The next step is to talk with your neighbors or friends that live in the same area as you and see if they have seen the dog. You would be surprised at how often lost dogs turn up at a neighbor's house after they wander right in on their own. Check the places in the area that you know your dog enjoys and may run off too. If your dog has a favorite friend that you know about make sure to check out the location at which they live.
If your pet does not turn up after doing both of these things, you will next want to check the local police station and animal shelter. In many towns, police will pick up stray dogs and bring them directly to the station before trying to figure out who the owner is. If an owner cannot be determined of a pet, they are brought to an animal shelter most of the time. Check both of these places. The possibility of your dog being at one of these is very high.
Once you have checked the police station and animal shelter, the next step is to make posters and place ads about your lost dog. Make small posters with a picture and information about your dog and post them all over town. Make sure to include your own contact information so you can be contacted once the dog is found. These types of posters are seen by a large number of people if you put them up in the right places.
After completing the posters and getting them circulated, you just have to wait. Hopefully someone will inform you on the location of your precious dog. Frequently check veterinarian offices and see if they have seen a dog like yours and keep visiting shelters to see if your dog may have turned up there. Do not give up hope of finding your dog as missing pets sometimes turn up quite a while after they go missing. Follow these simple and general steps and the chances of finding your dog will be better.
