How to Find Money Searching State Unclaimed Property Databases

State Treasuries Have Websites that May Have Cash Waiting for You!

I have found that searching state unclaimed property databases is a great way to have fun, make friends, and maybe even find a few dollars for yourself. It is very easy to search the state database, and there is no cost to search or claim YOUR funds. This article contains tips that can be used simply to search to see whether you or someone you know has money waiting to be claimed.

Who can do this? Anyone with computer access can perform the free searches and begin the claim process. What kinds of money do people find? Unclaimed utility deposits, stock certificates, insurance proceeds, untendered check funds, and much more. When can I search? At your convenience, 24/7, from the comfort of your own home.

Where? Enter your favorite search engine and look up "unclaimed property" as well as the name of every state where you have lived, including the current one. Look for monies listed as owing to you, then look up your friends and family members. Remember to enter several different variations of each name; for example, Richard "Dick" VanDyke would want to check Richard VanDyke, Richard Van Dyke (note spacing variation), both variations of last name with first and then both initials, and even check nicknames. Married (and formerly married) women should be sure to check maiden and former married names. It would be nice to think that everyone uses the same format for inputting names, but as you do searches in the various states' databases, take a look at how very different similar entries can be. Also try the search without entering a city name just in case the entry was spelled incorrectly (Sayre was misspelled Syre).

Why? Who doesn't need a little extra cash? How do I prove the money is mine? Do they need proof that I am who I say I am/Can I claim someone else's funds if we have the same name? There is a validation process required to receive the listed funds; it is not as simple as filling out a form and swearing the money is yours-you have to prove it. Claimants must provide current identification, such as a photo ID, as well as documentation linking the Owner to the address at which the unclaimed property is registered. Did you move and forget to notify a utility provider who was holding a deposit? If they mailed your refund check to an invalid address in an envelope marked, "Do Not Forward," your check would be returned and, eventually, those funds would make their way to the state's unclaimed property database. In some cases, heirs/relatives with legal rights can claim funds for those who are deceased; check the state's website or call the toll-free Treasury number for details.

Searching state unclaimed property websites is an exciting form of entertainment. Family members, friends, and coworkers will be shocked and surprised when you help them to claim their unclaimed funds, too. Have fun searching!

I enjoy writing and have been told I have a knack for capturing the essence of others' thoughts on paper in my business writing. Someday I hope to write a book, maybe a collection of short essays.  View profile
