How to Find Old Friends Through Social Networking Sites When You're in Your 50's

Denise Nuttall
Many social networking sites use the invitation to find friends or find old friends through the use of their site. I have been able to make friends online that by definition I would trust but never have I found a long lost old friend directly.

Usually to find a friend I have not kept in contact with for quite some time requires me to do a little leg work.

First I will join a social networking site that I can connect with people that live in the same area as my friend once lived. Once I establish a relationship with a few people, I proceed to start asking questions as to if they know so and so. Sometimes they may know the person and quite often they don't.

Then I will ask if possibly they may know someone who may know this person. If I have established enough trust with the friend on the social networking site, they may give me a referral of someone who may know. I can then e-mail this person or possibly garner a phone number.

I am into my '50s and for some reason it seems most of the people I am trying to rekindle an old friendship with are never on any social networking sites that I am involved with.

Quite often I have to join several social networking sites just to get a lead to find a friend. I now belong to about 12 different sites. I have found a couple of old friends by participating on the networking sites.

I also am a member of Classmates.com, where I can keep an updated profile on myself so other people can find me. I am also able to find people that I have not thought about in years. This is a pretty cool site.

To be able to find old friends through the use of social networking sites is a nice tool. No longer is it necessary to spend hours searching phone numbers and making phone calls to people you are barely acquainted with. Nor is it necessary to spend a lot of time mailing letters through the postal service, only to never receive a response.

Social networking sites do work to find friends. It may not be a direct route to locate a friend that you were once so very close, but it can lead you indirectly to find an old friend. I know it has worked for me.
