How to Find Organic Cotton Towels

Gary Allen
Organic cotton towels come in many sizes and colors. They also come in many different forms of organic. Some manufacturers use certified organic cotton and call it good. Some manufacturers go a little further and use colorgrown cotton so that they don't have to add chemicals during the dying process. It's even possible to enhance the feel of organic cotton towels by using fabric combinations such as bamboo and cotton.

Certified organic cotton is easy to identify by the USDA certified organic stamp. But once the cotton is loaded on the truck and goes to the clothing manufacturer, what happens next? Chemicals in the form of fire retardants are added. Some chemicals containing heavy metals will be added during the dye process. If an article of clothing has USDA certified organic labels, it really only applies to how the cotton was grown.

If you want to know the exact process used in putting your clothes together, it's best to contact the manufacturer or retailer to find out the additional steps they have taken to go green.

Organic cotton and bamboo combinations.

Bamboo plants are like aspen trees, they don't have to be replanted after harvesting. New shoots rapidly grow from the existing root system. Bamboo grows fast without the assistance of fertilizer or pesticides and is ready for harvest in four years.

Bamboo that is grown for industrial purposes can be done in a sustainable and eco-friendly fashion. Unfortunately, in order to economically turn bamboo into a fiber useable for clothing requires the use of solvents to finish the job. A second option that involves the use of water, but most manufacturers find the cost to be prohibitive.

Bamboo's high absorbency rate makes it a good choice for towels. Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial; making the material resistant to mold and mildew.

Bamboo is a good material to hybridize with organic cotton. Organic cotton is lower in cost for both the designer and the consumer, and the addition of the bamboo fiber adds more softness and the antimicrobial benefits.

Organic Bamboo Towels

This company has a selection of baby towels, bath and kitchen towels. Their baby towel set consists of three towels. One hooded organic towel and two wash cloths

Major retailers are looking for ways to take advantage of the organic movement. The problem occurs when a consumer takes the time to go to a major retailer's website that supposedly sells organic clothing, none can be found or the search terms are so arcane that all hope is lost of finding the merchandise.

The easiest way to go green is by searching out niche retailers on the internet who specialize in organic cotton towels. A large percentage of the online shops will give you a choice of organic cotton and the latest cotton and bamboo blends.

Organic cotton towels that are dyed and processed using only plant/vegetable dyes are even better, because they have been processed without the use of any chemicals absolutely, and so, are really truly organic in nature.
I found some at: http://store.fabrics-textiles.com, i think they are called Atlantis Fabrics.
