How to Find Out What Version of Ubuntu You Are Running

Ubuntu: a funny name for a serious operating system. Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system offered free of charge for those computer users with the technical know-how to operate it. As of article date (06/11), Ubuntu is in it's 11.04 version of development with the newest features including a taskbar on the side of the screen.

In order to get full use out of your Ubuntu operating system, you need to learn how to use the command line terminal. This program will become your best friend when it comes to installing application. For your first terminal command, you can run this command to find out exactly what version of Ubuntu you are running.

Steps:

Open the "Applications" menu.

Choose "Accessories" from the list of options.

Open up the Ubuntu "Terminal."

Type the following command into the terminal command line: cat /etc/issue

Press the "Enter" key.

Press the "x" button in the top left corner to close the terminal.

Tips:

Ubuntu is available for free download at their website. Once you download it, you need to create a bootable disk to install either the operating system on your hard drive or in a virtual environment.
