How to Find the Perfect Engagement Ring

Brenda Hoffman
An engagement ring represents a great promise in that it tells someone that you wan to spend the rest of your life with them. Once you decide to purchase one for your girlfriend, you will find that there are a lot of different options and cuts available. In fact, the number of choices can be quite overwhelming. Whenever you begin to feel this way, you need to remember that you are not alone. A lot of people have been in your shoes before. Many of them have no clued about the different types of rings that are available or why they cost so much.

A lot of people will purchase a princess cut diamond ring, which is a single (solitaire) diamond on a set of prongs. Sometimes this is surrounded with a lot of smaller diamonds around the band. For the past decade, this has been the jewel industry's standard engagement ring.

Whenever you are looking for a ring, there are some things that you should look for. The easiest way in which to remember what these things are is to remember "the four C's." These are:

• Cut. This has to do with the type or style that the diamond has been fashioned into. A lot of people get confused here because there are a lot of different types of cuts available. To the naked eye, most of these will look the same. This is especially true if you don't have any idea what you are looking for.

• Clarity. This has to do with how much light the diamond will allow in or out. The more light a diamond captures, the more expensive it is going to be.

• Carat-weight. This will tell you how heavy the diamond itself is. While a diamond may look really big, that doesn't mean that it is going to cost you a lot of money. Usually this is because the diamond will have some blemishes or flaws. So, you will want to take a very close, careful look at it before making your purchase.

• Color. This means precisely what you think it would mean. It has to do with the color of the diamond. Colored diamonds are not nearly as popular as clear, colorless diamonds. This is because the colorless diamonds will let in the most light. Nevertheless, anyone who is looking for either a unique or an antique ring whenever they are getting engaged may wish to opt for a diamond that does have some color to it.

Three other things that you will want to think about when purchasing a ring are:

• Price. Make sure that you know what you can afford before you go shopping. While this budget is important, you also want to make sure that the ring will make her happy and convey your true feelings to her.

• Your girlfriend's personality. This is very important. There are lots of rings to choose from though, so you will be able to find something that is perfect for her. Throughout the process though, keep in mind that petite women will like petite rings while straightforward women will appreciate a platinum ring.

• Purchase a ring from a reputable store. An engagement ring represents a lifelong commitment; a credible store will be able to offer you a high quality ring that will last a lifetime. This is a whole lot more important than you might imagine.

Now that you have an understanding of these things, it should be easier for you to find the engagement ring of your dreams. This will help you to have more confidence whenever you do get down on your one knee to propose to the lady of your dreams. Of course, these are all things that you will want to have once that special day arrives.
