There are many hotel/motel chains that accept pets, each chain does have their own rules pertaining to pets staying but a quick call before you go will clear it up. Some locations take dogs of certain sizes, while some will require you keep the pet in a kennel at night, or while you are out of the room. Here are some tips when traveling with a pet.
1. When you call for your reservations advise them that you are traveling with a pet and they can tell you which locations will accept pets and what the requirements are.
2. There is a website that has a database of all the hotels that accept pets and the information about the locations rules concerning pets. It is pets welcome and it is one of the best sites I found when researching where to stay with a pet. Researching before you go is one of the best ways to find a hotel before you're in a new city looking for a place to stay. The thing that I like about this site is they even list amusement parks that have kennels for your pet while you enjoy the day at the park. There are also locations of campgrounds. If you are traveling with a pet, I would recommend checking out this website.
3. If you are visiting friends and family and you are staying at a hotel that night, maybe they will watch your pet and you won't have to worry about finding a pet friendly hotel.
More and more motels / hotels are accepting the traveling pet. Always double check with them before leaving. Taking your pet along with you on vacation is possible and everyone can have a great time.

Almost all La Quintas are pet friendly. We don't have dogs, but we try to find la Quinta's when we're on the road so that we can get steal some cuddles from other guest's dogs! hahaha!
