Websites like volunteermatch.org help you find an organization in need close to you that has to do with the things you are interested in. Just go to the website, type in your city or zip code and what you are interested in helping with and a list of opportunities will appear on the screen.
Onebrick.org is another site that provides you with opportunities. You can sign up for one event while not having to commit to doing others, so it is a good way to test run volunteering. Unfortunately, this organization is only established in a few major cities in the US: Chicago, Washington DC, St Paul, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. So if you don't live in or near these places, this site won't be of very much use to you.
Dosomething.org is a volunteer site that is created for teenagers who want to get out and make this world a better place. This is my favorite website because it is centered around a younger generation. It allows you to advertise an idea you have about starting your own organization in order to find other people who are interested in the same cause, helps you to find organizations that are already established in your area so you can join, gives you ideas of what you could do to help based on what you are interested in, and even offers money to help you kick start your own charity. After you start your own charity, it can help you track your goals and keep others posted on what you are up to. It really is an amazing website and I highly suggest you check it out.
Getting out into the world and doing something for other people will not only make you feel good about yourself, but it will make someone else's life better. You can make a difference!
