Type of electrician: First of all, home owners and most private business owners merely need a regular Minneapolis electrician. But if you're trying to find someone to provide service for a large non-residential complex such as an apartment or office building, or a school, or gas station, you'll need a commercial electrician. You'll find, however, that many electrical companies do both.
Check their credentials: Also, during your search to find a qualified, trustworthy Minneapolis electrician, you'll find electric companies and private electricians who advertise that they are licensed, bonded or insured. This is preferable, yet not all electricians mention it, even if they do have these credentials. If they don't, ask them.
Basically, being a licensed electrician means those contractors passed a test, have a license number, and understand the legal requirements for doing that particular type of work, which makes them qualified. If electricians are bonded and fail to complete your job, you can file a claim against them, which makes them more trustworthy. And being insured means they carry a liability policy, which means you, as their client, are protected, which should ensure their trustworthiness.
Make a list! Write down the name and contact information of each Minneapolis electrician you find that sounds most impressive to you, so that after your initial search, you can contact them and ask specific questions.
Who to choose and how: Once you have compiled your short list, call each of them and ask for their qualifications. Describe your problem or what you need done, and ask for their rates and how soon they can come out. At the same time, decide if you feel comfortable with how they personally respond to your questions. Then you can add their individual responses to that list and compare them, which will help you to further narrow down your choices.
Important! Once you've narrowed down those choices, check on them with your city's or state's Better Business Bureau for their ratings, and to see if any complaints have been filed against those you are considering. (Don't be surprised if you find that many electric companies aren't deemed qualified or trustworthy.) For Minneapolis, you can find the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota online at http://minnesota.bbb.org/ or call them at (651) 699-1111.
Methods of Searching:
Don't dispel the worth of finding an electrician through word-of-mouth, because I've found the best deals for most of the contractors I've needed in this way, and they've been trustworthy, hard-working, qualified, and easy to work with. Contact your neighbors, friends, relatives and co-workers, and ask them if they've hired any electricians in Minneapolis (or your city) in the past that they would recommend for you. Ask them to relate their overall experience, including if they felt the charges were competitive, if the service person was friendly, and if they considered the work well-done and timely. Don't feel that you're imposing. Those you contact will be more than grateful that they were able to help you!
If you prefer finding a Minneapolis electrician online, simply use the keywords "Minneapolis electricians" and "Minneapolis electrical companies." This not only will bring up a variety of listings, but will direct you to reviews on specific companies or individuals so you can learn about other people's experiences with them. Another good search term is "electrical handymen Minneapolis," because there are many highly qualified and trustworthy handymen who have competitive rates. You can even try "Minneapolis commercial electricians" because you'll find plenty of electricians in your city who are diversified in their work.
If you prefer to find an electrician in your city by using the yellow pages in a phone book, look under "Electric Contractors." If you prefer using a newspaper's classified ads, look under "Services, Private Contractors" or something similar.
Just remember: Compile a list of the electricians you want to focus on, call them to check their credentials and compare their rates, and check them out at your Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed, no matter which method you used to find them. By following these suggestions and comparing all your findings, you'll be able to find the one qualified and trustworthy Minneapolis electrician or electrical company that best suits your needs.

Excellent advice and guidance
Happy New Year! to you, Darlene!
I spent four years of hard work both in the classroom and on the job learning how to be an electrician. That's what the IBEW requires in order to become a journeyman electrician. To this day, I would hire a union electrician over non-union just because of the training I know they get. I think that's particularly important when it comes to electrical work.
I have read many of your Health articles. Sadly, no comments are allowed by let me say they are awesome.
