How to Find Silverfish in Your Home

Steven Holden
Silverfish are tricky critters. Sometimes you will see two or three, then several weeks will go by before you see anymore. So where are the silverfish hiding in your house and how can you find them? This article will go over details on how to find where silverfish are within your home so you can decide the best ways to get rid of them.

Let's start off by noting that silverfish are nocturnal animals that fear people. So from this you can gather that if it is daylight or if a person is around the silverfish will scurry away and will hide from you.

So were exactly do silverfish stay or live? Well, silverfish are very small insects with sizes ranging from one quarter to one half of an inch in length. Because of this they usually stay hidden in small cracks or holes within baseboards, floors, and walls. What basically happens is that the silverfish will wait until it's dark, then come out of their hiding places, and then when sunlight emerges they will scurry back to their home.

So how can you find out where silverfish are living? Well this isn't easy because as soon as you start looking for the silverfish they will simply run away to a safer spot. So the best way to find out which rooms they are most prevalent in is to set small silverfish traps. You can do this by getting a cereal box and laying it on the ground with a few pieces of cereal within the box. When nighttime comes the silverfish will go into the box because there is food in it and will not realize when it is daylight because the box itself is dark. So when you come into the room they will stay inside the box rather than walk across the open floor with light all around them. Doing this will allow you to simply pick up the box and count the silverfish. Rooms with the most amount of silverfish will have a more populated box than rooms with less silverfish.
