How to Find Song Ideas

So you are a songwriter or an aspiring songwriter? You enjoy writing songs and you have probably written well over a dozen songs already or maybe you are stuck and have no idea what to write a song about. Writer's block happens to a great deal of songwriters. If you have lost the power of productivity and do not know how to gain it back, take a look below at some of the different ways to find song ideas.

Sit back and think about your past. Is there anything significant that stands out in your past? Were you hurt by someone? Did you lose someone special? Did you experience a life changing event? All of these situations can easily be turned into a song. For instance, maybe you and a friend ended a long term relationship, you can write about how that made you feel. You can write about how you feel about that person. Pain makes some of the most beautiful art so don't be afraid to dig into memories and pull up the most painful ones.

Sit back and think about your life in the present time. How is life going for you now? It may be stagnant since you are here on Associated Content reading this article on how to come up with song ideas. Think about your current life and the people around you. Is there anything relevant that sticks out that you can turn into a song idea? Maybe you are currently jobless. Write about how it feels to have to live below your normal limits and how you need change. Maybe you have a nonexistent social life; you can write about how lonely you are or you can write about how it would be to have a social life.

Take a walk outside. You might be surprised at how a little walk around the neighborhood or even down the street can inspire you. You might come across a strange looking group of people, or an awkward display, or a beautiful flower growing out of shabby concrete. Take a look at nature. Maybe the birds, wind, or trees can stir up some writer's inspiration inside of you. Maybe you might meet someone new and engage in conversation.

Think of your future. Where do you want to be in the future? What do you want to accomplish? The great thing about writing about the future is that the possibilities are endless. No one knows what the future holds.

Broaden your songwriting skills by writing in different perspectives. Write from the first, second, and third person point of view. You can take real life situations that have happened to others and turn them into songs of your own or you can make up situations and turn those into songs. For instance, maybe you came upon a car accident in which one person ended up badly bruised in the hospital. You can take that situation and build upon it. You can pretend that the person that ended up in the hospital is your loved one or someone else's loved one and you can write about all the things that you wished you would have said to him/her before this incident.

Use your imagination. You can place yourself into different situations and you can create situations of your own. Pretend to break up with someone and write a song about that. Write about life, love, or happiness.

Read the newspaper, watch the news or listen in on someone's conversation. You might find an inspirational story. Keep your ears and eyes open so that you do not miss out on opportunity.

Use your five senses; write about what you see, think, feel, hear and even taste.

Lastly, you want to remember that during writer's block you should stay away from the radio and stay away from listening to other people's songs. When you are experiencing writer's block you will find that you have a dire need to pen something. If you turn on the radio or listen to some music you might subconsciously start to mimic what you are listening to when you begin to write your new song. As a songwriter it is always best to be as original as you can.
