Strategies to Find Storage Unit Auctions

J. Motes

If you have been watching "Storage Wars" or "Auction Hunters" and want to give buying the contents of storage units for profit a try, you are going to have to find some storage auctions. If your area is like mine, it seems that there are storage unit facilities everywhere. However, finding out when to get some cash and head out to the auction requires some research.

Online Listings

The simplest way to find storage auctions is to search for online listings. Storage auctions are sometimes listed on Craigslist and other online sites. The online classifieds of your local newspapers is another possible source. The auction may be listed under the legal notices. There are numerous online sites that specifically deal with storage auctions. Many of these sites deal only with auctions in specific states or regions. Spend some time searching for sites that list auctions in your area, but don't rely solely on these sites as they may not list every sale in your area.

Drive Around

One other way to find storage auctions is to simply look around. As you drive around town , keep an eye out for storage facilities. If the facility is having an upcoming auction there will be a sign posted. Stop and ask the attendant if and when the storage facility auctions units. If it is accessible, keep an eye on the dumpster. Before defaulting, some people will simply clean out the room and trash most of the stuff. Ask the attendant, but it is likely they will be more than happy to have you dig through and take some of the stuff away. You may not find gold bars in the stuff in the dumpster, but at least it is free.

Auctioneers

A storage auction will need an auctioneer. You can simply contact local auctioneers for information on storage auctions. If the auctioneer doesn't handle these sales he or she will likely know who does. There are also scores of websites that list standard auction in various areas as well as nationwide. These sites may include information on storage auctions. If no storage auctions are listed, visit a standard auction and talk to the bidders and auction staff to find information on storage auctions.
