Books
Purchase a book that is devoted to Visual Basic.NET at any major bookstore. If the book comes with a CD of code examples in the back of the book, insert the CD into your CD or DVD-ROM drive and follow the screen prompts to load the files onto your computer. Many technical books offer a "How to Use this Book" or "Where to Start" section in the beginning of the book. If none of these scenarios are applicable, then begin at the beginning of the book and take your time reading the material and working through the examples.
Tutorials within Visual Studio.NET
Open Visual Studio.NET. The developer environment already comes preset to the Visual Basic programming language. Locate the blue topic box in the lower left hand of the screen and click on "Create Your First Application." Follow the links and prompts to complete a walk through tutorial of Visual Basic.NET within the developer environment. You can also click on "Use a Starter Package" and follow the screen prompts for this as well. It's recommended you do both to get the maximum learning from the tutorials already available in the environment. The order you choose to start with will not matter.
Online Tutorials
Log onto the internet and visit a free website that offers free Visual Basic.NET tutorials such as those from Microsoft.com. A link directly to some of these free tutorials provided by Microsoft is listed at the end of the article in the reference section. Start at the section labeled "Samples and Walkthroughs" and click on "Visual Basic Sample Applications." Review each of the sample applications to get a feel for how Visual Basic.NET coding is put together.
Other Helpful Info
While you're working within the Visual Studio.NET environment, running your mouse over any one given area and the software will tell you what that command or object does in Visual Basic.NET. Any new project you actually end up completing while learning to work with Visual Basic.NET will not necessarily work on any other computer without properly packing, building and deploying the new software from within the Visual Studio.NET environment. Although the instructions are roughly the same for each language employed in the Visual Studio.NET environment, its complexity is beyond the scope of this article.
