The National Associated of Unclaimed Property Administrators, also called NAUPA, is an organization formed by a number of government officials of different states that are working together to return people unclaimed property that they are owed. It's estimated that there is a total of $32.8 billion dollars of unclaimed property that's owed to the American people. Chances are that you or someone you know has some amount of unclaimed property that can be collected for absolutely nothing if you go out and that the assets are there!
Thanks to modern technology, search for your unclaimed property online is extremely easy. You can head on over to www.missingmoney.com, which is NAUPA's partner site that allows you to search for unclaimed property. Just type in your name, the state that you're from, and the website will provide you a listing of potential matches for your name and names that are similar to yours. It will provide a listing of where the money's from, and what the last known address of the individual that the money is owed to if available. Be sure to search your family members' names, any previous names that you had, and the names of anyone who is deceased that you are an heir to as well, which will likely find additional unclaimed property.
If you believe that you have found a match that is yours, you can claim the money through their simple online form if you can demonstrate that the money is indeed yours. Each state will require different levels of documentation to provide that the money is indeed owed to you, but it's not ever anything that's terribly difficult to demonstrate.
Not everyone will have a big pile of unclaimed money, but the process to search for unclaimed assets in your name will only take a few minutes, and if you do find something, it's free money that you didn't have before.
