How to Find and Utilize an Attorney or Legal Aid

Cindy Leggett
There comes a time in everyone's life when they realize they are in need of the services of an attorney.

How will you know? The first scenario that comes to mind is when someone sues you, or you want to sue someone. In this case, a lot depends on the basis for the lawsuit. If it is for a matter that can be handled in small claims court, you are usually safe in representing yourself, especially if the amount of money involved is low. But not all legal affairs are this easy to handle.

Getting a lawyer to handle your case is a good idea when your life plans go awry and you -

Get a divorce

Are accused of committing a crime

Are involved in estate planning in any capacity

Buy or sell a home or a place of business

Are in a motor vehicle or other type of accident

These are but a few of the many law specialties. Lawyers can be a bit like doctors in this respect, practicing a variety of legal needs much like a physician who uses his professional skills as a family doctor. They can handle many of the problems that people may meet unexpectedly. Other lawyers specialize in one legal area.

You will more than likely know what sort of services you need from an attorney before you began to search for one. If you aren't sure, a good idea is to locate a law firm which is staffed with several specialists, one of which can help you determine which legal classification your problem falls in.

A good way to find an attorney to suit you is to ask friends and family members which lawyers they have used in the past. They can give you an idea of fees paid and their general satisfaction with the services they received. Your local bar association can also be helpful in locating the right attorney for you. When you think you may have found someone you can work with, schedule an interview to discuss your problem. You may or may not have to pay a fee for this meeting. If so, it could be worth the cost to insure a good attorney-client relationship. Have a list of questions regarding your case prepared, and ask specific questions about how the lawyer plans to keep you informed of the progress on your case. Ask about retainer fees, which can be to your advantage, as you will not have to pay the entire cost of legal representation up front, and get an written agreement which details exactly what your lawyer will and will not do for you, and what he will charge for his services.

It can be stressful knowing that you need a lawyer to help you handle a problem. Hopefully, these tips will help you find a professional who can resolve your case for you.
