How to Fix Exterior Trim

It is important to keep your exterior trim in good condition. Not only a decorative element, exterior trim helps prevent moisture from working its way underneath the exterior envelope, causing water damage. You will find exterior trim around windows and doors, but also on corners and above the foundation. When preparing your home for winter, take some time to examine all of the trim on your house for signs of disrepair. Then make any necessary repairs.

Step 1: Remove any damaged sections of trim, using a pry bar or the back of a hammer to pry off the trim. Using a utility knife, scrape away any sections of caulk around the exterior trim you have just removed.

Step 2: Measure the resulting empty space and cut a piece of trim with a miter saw or saw and miter box to fit the space as appropriate.

Step 3: Install the trim using finishing nails spaced every 12 inches. Make sure, however, there is a nail close to each end of the trim to prevent warping.

Step 4: Prime the trim with a weather resistant exterior primer. Allow the primer to dry completely before continuing.

TIP: If you have stained wood trim, skip this step and the next step. Instead, stain the trim to match the surrounding exterior trim. Then add two to three coats of a clear sealant to protect the wood from water damage.

Step 5: Paint the trim with a weather resistant exterior paint. Allow the paint to dry, then apply a second coat for more even color and extra protection. Allow the paint to dry again.

Step 6: Caulk around the exterior trim using a high grade silicon exterior caulk. This will ensure that no moisture can sneak under the new trim.

TIP: Now is also the time to scrape away any damaged caulking around exterior trim that is still in good condition. You can paint the exterior trim to cover any scratch marks, then apply new caulk to the area.
