I love to knit socks. I prefer to use double pointed needles rather than knitting on circular needles. But handmade socks are going to wear through the heel and toe way sooner than store bought socks. And that is because machine knit socks are extra enforced at the toe and heel. Makes sense! So we knitters need to figure out this process. Well here is what I do.
While working on the toe and heel part of the sock pattern, any pattern, I will use a lighter weight yarn than what the sock is being made of and double my yarn for those two parts of the pattern. For instance, you might be making a 4-ply dark blue sock and you might use a 2-ply light blue yarn for your reinforcement yarn. Just knit the pattern as usual through the toe and heel part of the pattern hold both yarns throughout. Then weave in the ends of the reinforcement yarn when you are done with that part of the pattern. You won't believe the difference this extra cush and reinforcement makes to your finished product. And the contrast is gorgeous. You will love this idea.
Once thing I hate when knitting with two or more colors is getting my yarn tangled. It is a nightmare and quite honestly I don't have the patience to sit and untangle it and I frequently end up cutting it and working a new piece back into my pattern. Then I got smart. Maybe this will help you too.
You know those huge storage zip lock bags. The blue ones that are really big. I use that as my yarn storage container. Then I take two or however many yarns I am currently working with and I put each one in a quart or gallon size zip lock bag. Then I place those into the huge blue bag. You might think just the quart and gallon size bags should be enough, well so did I until I found myself getting frustrated and cutting the yarn again. Why? Because the yarn bags were twisting around each other as the pattern progressed and before you know it I had a big mess all wound around each other. By putting them inside the huge bag, they stayed separated and all I ever needed to do was to turn the bag over from time to time to keep everything straight.
So I hope these tips will help you cut down on the frustration of knitting and will allow you to enhance your love of knitting. So go ahead Knit on!

I wish I knew how to really knit. I use looms. Someday I'd love to learn.
I can tell you are writing from experience. I got halfway through a project before a pet bird decided to try and unravel my yarn for her nest. She was covered in yarn, poor thing.
I'm pretty sure getting yarn tangled would be my biggest frustration, as well as my biggest accomplishment in knitting :)
I'm still trying to learn!
I'd be frustrated all the time if I did knit. Good article.
