How to Fix No Sound Problem from Computer Speakers

A Step-By-Step Tutorial on Resolving the Problem of No Sound from Your Speakers

The Armchair Geek
The problem of no sound in the computer may occur due to a number of reasons. This tutorial will walk you through the steps you need to take to diagnose and resolve the loss of sound on your computer.

Step #1 Check your Speaker Connections
The first thing to check when the sound is not audible in the PC is speaker connections. The speaker connection can be substituted by headphones to test the sound of the computer.

Step #2 Check your Volume Control Settings
If sound is not still heard, check the volume and mute settings in the volume control window. You can get to the volume control window by double-clicking on the speaker icon in your system tray, or by following these steps:

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Entertainment >> volume Control

Any check marks near the mute check boxes should be removed.

Step #3 Perform a System Restore
If the sound, which was audible before, is lost suddenly lost, it may have to perform a System Restore. It can be done easily - here's how:

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore

Follow the instructions shown by the wizard. If it does not work...

Step #4 Delete and Re-install the Original Sound Drivers
The sound driver may be corrupted or missing and, as a result, the restore utility menu will not be available. In this event, deleting and reinstalling will help resolve the problem. The process of doing this may vary depending upon the operating system in use. In windows XP:

Start >> Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager >> Sound, Video and Game Controllers

*In the Device Manager, you will click a sound device name and press the delete key in the keyboard, and then OK on the window that appears.

*Similarly, remove all the sound devices in the list except Audio Codec's and Legacy Audio Drivers.

*Next, restart the computer and reinstall the drivers using the Driver and Application Recovery CDs in Windows XP.

*If there is any updated sound driver software, download it from the Internet by following the instructions.

Step #5 Disable Digital Audio Play Back
If there is still no sound, disable digital audio play back in the device manager - here's how:

Start >> My Computer >> Properties >> Hardware >> DVD/CD-ROM since it is not used by many optical drives.

Step #6 Update BIOS
If this fails as well, installation of updated firmware BIOS will be needed.
