How to Fix a Snag in Your Tights or Panyhose

Beth Inman
This is the most important event in a long time. You spent hours deciding what to wear. Finally satisfied with your appearance you have arrived at the meeting place. You jump into the bathroom at the last minute to make sure you look great. After going potty, you pull your stockings back into place. Your nail makes a hole... is this scenario familiar?

I am fairly certain, that anyone who has ever forced themselves into a pair of nylons, has experienced this feeling of "oh my gosh...what now?"

As most of us know, the wonderful bottle of clear nail polish deserves a place on honor on the shelf of emergency equipment. Always, always, make sure you have this small bottle of life saving liquid where you can reach it in an emergency! A dab of clear nail polish applied around the perimeter of the hole will stop it from running. If you can catch it quick enough, it will stop at just a hole. Otherwise, you will have to paint the polish at the bottom of the run. Be certain to dab it at the bottom of each and every run. One missed run will spread. Every whole will result in several runs, as that is the way the fabric is woven, so get them all. The down side is, the stocking will be stuck to your leg, so try and do it under your clothing. After it dries, you can pull it from your skin, but do so carefully. It will work better for the time being if you leave it alone though.

There are a couple items you can use other than nail polish:

My favorite is Run Free. One application will repair your hose. Permanently. It is washable and invisible. It works instantly, and the best this is, that it stays soft and flexible. It will not stick to your leg, and if someone were to run their hands down your legs, they can't feel it! Much better than the hard rough spot nail polish makes! Run Free costs about $5 and is in a container about the size of a tube of mascara. It carries in your purse or desk drawer easily.

Another product is called "Fray Check". You can buy this at most fabric stores. It is not the same like clear nail polish, because this is invisible and doesn't harden. It applies like nail polish.

I keep a bottle of Fray Check in my desk drawer at work and a tube of Run Free in my purse. The Run Free is my favorite.

I also have an article on how to prolong the life of your pantyhose. I would suggest reading this if you are one of us lucky people who are required to wear hose everyday. Treating your hose before you wear them will save a lot of money and frustration.

May I ask where you buy Run Free? I've been looking everywhere with no luck!
