How to Flick Coins

Flicking Coins Across the Room with Your Fingers

Chad R. Herman
At some point in our life, in our day to day lives for that matter, we find ourselves with a large amount of change. Quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies have a way of multiplying faster than you realize. Because they are spendable currency, we can't be all that upset about this odd increase; however, what other things can you do with all those coins? There's always coin collecting, which is nice for the special coins, but what about good old rusty pennies that have been at the bottom of a tin can for years? You shoot them across the room!

Needed

Large amount of coins

Fingers - preferably the middle and the thumb. If unable to use another finger can be substituted for the middle.

Step 1

Find a coin. It doesn't matter what coin, however, dimes are usually a little small to start out with. If you're more comfortable with larger coins, they are OK too, but then there is another caution, don't get use to "shooting" just the bigger quarter or you will find it very difficult to transition to a penny or a nickel.

Step 2

Learn to snap with your thumb and middle finger. There are thousands of ways to snap, and people are taught each of these depending on the region of the world they grew up in. Basically, press your thumb and middle finger against each other till you can't press any farther. Then let your thumb slide off your middle finger while still applying the same force.

Step 3.

Grasp the coin with your middle finger and thumb, so that your thumb is on the bottom. Grasp it so that the coin is pointing toward your ring and pinky fingers and angled slightly downward. For many people this is an unnatural way of holding things, and may be the hardest part.

Step 4

Bend your arm back so that your hand is on top of your shoulder and next to your ear. Do not cross your body. Then snap. The coin will fly through the air and into any target you would like.

Tip

Practice the hold often, and it will get more and more comfortable
The middle finger pushes the coin through the air.

There is even a Guinness World Record for flicking coins (which I proudly hold) - at an amazing 12.11m - read about it http://www.worldrecordchase.com/records-stories/furthest-coin-flick2009.html
