How to Make a Floral Gift Basket and What to Put in It

Rebecca Said
One of the best gifts you can get or receive is a beautifully designed gift basket loaded with goodies. Both the basket and the contents can be completely customized for the occasion and the recipient's individual interests. Floral gift baskets can be used for so many different occasions. I would like to show you how to make this type of basket and then give you ideas on what type of goodies to fill it with.

To make a floral gift basket, you will need:

Wicker basket

Spanish moss

Floral garland with small flowers

3 colors of ¼ inch satin ribbon about 1 ½ yards each

Glue gun, floral wire, and scissors

Glue the Spanish moss around the basket rim and the top of the handle. Next, you will want to cut the flower garland to fit around the basket rim and glue it into place. Lastly, make a bow using all the ribbons and wire it into place at the center of the handle.

There is a lot of room for creativity in making baskets. You may decide that you do not like Spanish moss and want to leave it out. Perhaps, you decide to add small bunches of baby's breath throughout the flower garland. That is ok, you can design your basket in whatever way looks best for you. The ribbon on the bow can also help to customize the look of the basket as well. For example, I would suggest a blue or pink bow if it is a gift for a baby shower. You can also find ribbon that has a certain theme printed on it, such as balloons for a birthday. So, just have fun with it!

The most important thing in determining what to put in your basket is the gift recipient. At this point, you would need to think about what they are interested in. Personally, my favorite basket to get is one filled with chocolate and coffee. If you brainstorm on this, the possibilities are endless.

A gardener might like a basket with a garden theme. You could add some terra cotta pots along with herb seeds, and a magazine with articles about how they can grow their own herbs. In a housewarming basket, try adding some homemade bread, fruit jam, dishtowels, coffee mugs and hot cocoa. If they like movies, you could make a movie themed basket with different types of popcorn along with a gift certificate to a local movie rental business. A writer might enjoy a journal, different types of pens and a few books about writing.

As long as you customize the content of the basket to match up to the interests of the receiver, you simply cannot go wrong. Your gift basket will be a personal, meaningful gift that will be appreciated for a long time to come.
