A New Spin on a Traditional Item!

In the early days, pomanders were made with apples, civet, ambergris and other precious perfumed materials that were sought-after. They were used to cover-up body odor as bathing wasn't a frequent activity. Today, a homemade pomander is used for perfumed accent during formal events such as proms, weddings and other formal occasions. Knowing how to make your own floral pomander gives you the opportunity to make something beautiful and fragrant for your next special event.

Materials
Gather the following materials to construct a scented and beautiful floral pomander: Scissors, a slotted wiffle ball, mesh fabric, cotton balls, hot glue gun, silk ribbon roll, assorted silk flowers and assorted essential and fragrant oils.

These materials are easy to come across and obtain via craft and hobby supply stores, online vendors and even thrift stores.

Construction
Add a cup of cotton balls to a freezer bag. Add 1 whole oz. of essential/fragrant oil blend. The blend you choose is entirely up to you, which gives you the ability to experiment with a wide range of fragrances. For example, 1/2 oz. of lavender essential oil and 1/2 oz. of amber essential oil creates a smoky, sultry and romantic scent. Shake the bag of scented cotton balls until they are all saturated.

Stuff the saturated cotton balls into the slots of the wiffle ball. Force the scented balls in with your fingertips or a clean stick object.

Squeeze an "X" shaped series of lines of hot glue on a 8 by 8 inch square of mesh fabric of any color. Sit the filled wiffle ball on the center of the glued fabric. Wrap the fabric entirely around the ball. Let it dry for 5 minutes.

Snip the stems from an assortment of silk flowers. Silk flower choices include roses, carnations, lilies, orchids and a plethora of other interesting blossoms. Use your imagination.

Squeeze a dot of hot glue onto the backside of each snipped silk blossom.

Adhere each blossom to the mesh surface of the filled wiffle ball. Do this until the entire surface is completely covered with flowers. You shouldn't be able to see the mesh or the ball. Let the ball dry for about 10 minutes.

Snip a length of ribbon from the roll measuring the length you desire. For example, if you want to wear this pomander draped around your neck, you will need 30 inches of ribbon. If you want it to dangle from your wrist, use approximately 12 inches of ribbon.

Spread the ribbon out horizontally in front of you and make sure it is straight. Squeeze a dot of hot glue onto the very center of the strip of ribbon. Adhere the top-center of the flower-coated ball directly to the hot glue dot. Hold it into place firmly for a minute and release. Let it dry for 20 minutes before wearing it.

Wearing Your Floral Pomander
Tie the ribbon around your neck, allowing the pomander to drape down your front. Alternatively you can tie it into a bow around your wrist.
