How to Flute a Handkerchief

Malcolm Tatum
Even men who prefer casual wear have to dress up from time to time. One of the ways to make a suit look truly smart is to flute a handkerchief for the lapel pocket on the jacket. Fortunately, it is possible to learn how to do this in a matter of seconds.

Step 1

Press the handkerchief with an iron. Apply a small amount of spray starch before ironing. This will help the material to be crisp and slightly stiff.

Step 2

Place handkerchief on a flat surface, such as a table top.

Step 3

Grasp the center of the handkerchief firmly between the thumb and forefinger. Still holding the center of the handkerchief, lift the material off the table top.

Step 4

Using the opposite hand, make an "0" with the thumb and forefinger just below where the center of the handkerchief is held with the other hand. Run the "o" down to the middle of the fluted material.

Step 5

Fold the fluted section down so that the point is even with the ends of the handkerchief.

Step 6

Reverse the handkerchief so the flute and the ends are facing upward. Insert the body of the handkerchief into the lapel pocket, taking care to keep the three points formed by the fluted middle and the two ends slightly exposed. The end result will provide a bit of Continental flair to the suit without looking overtly stuffy or highbrow.

Tips & Warnings

Starching the handkerchief just before creating the flute will help to ensure the points remain in place throughout the evening. Make sure you know which heat setting to use when pressing the handkerchief. Synthetic materials are easier to scorch than cotton, and requires a lower setting.
