How Food Blogs Are Changing the Way We Think and Communicate About Food

In the past few years food blogs have become so mainstream that there is hardly a chef out there that doesn't have an online journal. Food Blogs are popular because the food industry is so large and diverse that the subjects that can be talked and blogged about are seemingly endless. One can blog about experimentations in the kitchen, review restaurants, share recipes, review recipes, review blogs, share their lives in the restaurant, etc. There are an endless array of options to choose from when writing a blog and choosing which blogs to read.

Being a cook myself I like to read blogs and search around the net for new ones every now and again, and I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of junk out there. To be a good blogger, especially about food, one needs to be current with what they blog about. They need to make sure that they are posting often and with interesting content, including beautiful pictures (because our attention spans can be that of a insect sometimes) and they need to know their audience. These are all things I look for in a good blog. The blogger doesn't necessarily need to be a world-renowned chef or entrepreneur to be interesting, some bloggers are just plain cooks that are chronicling their lives through the Internet.

A large percentage of sites that I check out almost everyday include food blogs. For a cook starting out in the industry it is very important to stay updated on the latest things happening in the industry, and what better way to stay current than with the internet, where information can be found in seconds.

Some of the food blogs that I have subscribed to include Ideas in Food (ideasinfood.com): Chefs Alexander Talbot and Aki Komazawa (from my school: NECI) are some of the most forward thinking and interesting people in the food industry, their articles are brilliant and their pictures are incredibly beautiful. L2O is a newer restaurant in Chicago and the Chef (Laurent Gras) blogs with several business partners and coworkers at his restaurant (l2o.typepad.com). The pictures on the site are interesting enough to sift through but the content is extremely interesting as well. Cooking Issues (cookingissues.wordpress.com) is another site I like to check out every now and again. It is written by two French Culinary Institute Chefs and deals with very precise technical food experimentations. The content can run-on however and can be a little dry but it is still very interesting for those into the chemical and technical side of cooking. These are just a few, as I didn't want the article to carry on forever. There are tons more out there with very interesting content including pictures, recipes, etc.

After a few years of deliberation, my best friend and I decided to start our own blog, not to gain fame and fortune or become infamous via internet but basically out of boredom and wonder to see if we could do it. So far so good but don't ask, the site (don'taskjusteat.blogspot.com, nice plug huh?) is still in its infancy and we are still trying to find out niche.

One thing is for sure, there is something for every when it comes to blogs and there is no exception when it comes to food blogs. Finding a blog that is right for you or even starting your own blog can be a little daunting at first, but sites like foodblogs.com and bloggerschoiceawards.com can help you on your way.

An article on the uk Times Online stated that as of February, 17 2009 there were 33,000 food blogs on the internet but there is really no way to know and there are certainly thousands more that have started since then...

    Thanks for the food blog resources! Have you checked out FoodBuzz.com? A press release was issued a few days ago that this site is the #1 food blog and outranks the Food Network and All Recipes. They have over 4,000 food bloggers and lots of gorgeous photos! It's my new favorite place to hang out.

    I stopped renewing my subscriptions to cooking magazines. Instead I just browse the food blogs ... for FREE!! I love www.FoodBlogs.com and www.FoodGawker.com -- awsome recipes and links to some great food and recipe blogs.
