How to Make a Footstool from Pringles Cans

Potato Chip Can Footstool

If you love potato chips, especially the kind that come in a can, you're going to love a footstool project you can make, using these types of cans. Because they're pillars the footstool will hold a good bit of weight, and when you're finished with the project, no one will know you started with Pringles cans!Gather the empty cans, leave off the lids, and get started on the footstool.

The cans will no longer look like potato chip cans when you wrap each one, individually, in fabric. Use spray adhesive, or another adhesive, to hold the fabric in place. Upholstery fabric, or other thick types, work great, but you can use anything - including cut up jeans!

After you've wrapped the cans you'll bundle them into a footstool shape. Start by placing one can in the center, then following with enough cans to surround the first one. You can add as many dimensions of cans as you wish, to get the footstool size you want.

Tie the cans with a piece of string or ribbon, temporarily, right around the center. After you've added the top and bottom of the footstool you can remove the tie.

Place the tied cans on a piece of fabric, then remove them, and place them on a piece of rubber, cork or even a floor mat for a car. Draw around, and cut, one fabric shape and one rubber shape.

Using the adhesive of your choice fasten the fabric shape to the top part of the footstool. Affix the rubber shape to the bottom of the stool. You can now remove the tie from around the center of the footstool. Now you can further design the stool or leave as-is.

There are other things you can add to the footstool to make it more unique. Attach legs to the bottom, using an adhesive which will allow you to stick the legs to the rubber or cork matting. You can also purchase a large, round pillow and affix it to the top of the footstool. This will give the stool more comfort and make it look a little larger.

Instead of adding the pillow to the top of the footstool you can also put it on and then add a fabric top. A pillow, cotton, pillow stuffing or even foam, are all suitable for the top of the footstool. After you've added the cushioning, and shaped it just right, cut a piece of fabric that will cover it and hang down a couple more inches. Tie a beautiful ribbon around the fabric. This will hold the fabric to the footstool, help shape the top, and give a unique look to the stool.

Another way to fashion the footstool is to eliminate covering each can with material. Just gather the cans, tie them together, add the top cushioning, then cover the entire footstool with a piece of round fabric. Tie the ribbon just under the cushion. Add lace to the bottom edge of the fabric circle, if desired.

No matter which design you choose you'll still need the rubber or cork on the bottom of the stool. If you have neither of those you can get by with cardboard. If you'll be adding a pillow or cushioning to the stool, cut a piece of cardboard to the shape of the top of the stool, and affix it. Now you have a solid base that will allow you to position the pillow at the top and the cardboard prevents users from feeling the can bottoms through the pillow.

The Pringles can footstool is unique and can be fashioned in many different ways. Getting hungry? Save those potato chip cans!.

  • Pringles cans make great footstools.
  • Cover the cans, individually, with fabric.
  • Add a pillow to the top of the footstool for more comfort.
You can also make something similar for a dollhouse, by starting with small lids or small spools of thread.
