How to Form and Run an Effective Study Group in College

Advance Your Grades and Meet New People

Chris Tidwell
Study groups in college are a key point in getting better grades during school. A good study group can make the difference between you failing or passing a subject, they can be great social meetings and very informative, but what exactly makes up a good study group? Well you can start with focus, planning, and having a group that will actually study and not just goof off.

You have to share knowledge for one thing. It's not up to just one person to run the study group and gather the information, you have to share the responsibility. Make sure every person in the group contributes in some way, and discuss what the best way to go bout studying and do it. It's ok for one person to be in charge of the study group, like an elected leader, or the person who's idea it was to start the group, just make sure all the responsibility does not fall on them.

Meet on days that are convenient for most of the people in your group, or set up a time and date that anyone can attend. Option to is probably the best this way the group has freedom and won't feel so stressed when they miss a meeting. Keep in mind that a lot goes on in the lives of a college student, so don't be upset if a member of the group misses a few times. Now if they miss on a regular bases, and only show up during exams and major tests then you may have a right to be irritated.

Keeping focus on topic of what you're studying is one of the hardest things to accomplish while studying in a group. We all have a tendency to want to be very social and casual in a group, which is fine to a degree, but remember that your main purpose in this group is to share notes and other key pieces of information about a specific class in order to pass that class and move on with your life. Stay focused on your notes and what members of the group are saying and contributing, yet still be light and keep a good attitude, don't be a stick in the mud.

Choose material to study based on what the groups weakest point in the subject is. If you are taking a math class and most of your group is having trouble with a particular area, then focus on it. Don't move on in study group and leave people behind, it does not promote a healthy environment.

Make sure and eat something either before or during the study group, and drink plenty of fluids. It's very hard to maintain a good focus on what's going on when you're hungry and or thirsty. Keeping some bottled water or some energy bars in your backpack is always a good idea, just in case.

Study groups are great and very helpful when conducted correctly so if you're interested then talk to your classmates and see about forming them. Also talk to your teachers, many times they will be more effective in setting up such a group and will even provide the facilities. Also having a teacher and their assistance can prove very helpful and their skills at organization and incite can prove to be vital in the success of your group.
