The 2008 Summer Olympics begin this week on August 8th in Beijing, China. Isn't it exciting? I love watching the opening ceremonies, with all of the flags waving, the athletes smiling, and wearing their countries' proud colors. It's a fantastic time in our history once again as the best of the best athletes come together to compete in sporting events to see who will come out on top.

What better time to teach our children about sports, sportsmanship, discipline and team dynamics than during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Here is a site that has FREE printables on the Summer Olympics and on each individual sport featured at the Games. Print out one, two, or all of them to enrich your child's understanding of sports and the Olympics and strengthen their vocabulary, spelling, and critical thinking skills at the same time. All you need is an Internet connection and a printer.

Step 1: Have a desire to learn more about the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Step 2: Go to this website: http://homeschooling.about.com/od/freeprintables/qt/summerolympics.htm?nl=1.

Step 3: Ask your children which sports they would like to know more about and print the sheets associated with that sport.

Step 4: Enjoy doing the word search, Olympic vocabulary words, crossword puzzles, alphabet activities, and drawing pages. There is even a Summer Olympics theme page featuring the torch! It's in color and looks amazing. On the same page are lines for writing about your favorite athlete or anything else to do with the 2008 Summer Olympics.

These completed pages could easily be incorporated into a lapbook on the 2008 Summer Olympics.
