How to Get Free Building Materials for Your Home Remodel Project
Cut Your Remodeling Costs with These Tips
Tip #1 - Look for Remodeling Project in Your Neighborhood
A good place to start your search for free building materials for your remodeling project is right in your very own neighborhood. If you notice that one of your neighbors is remodeling their home then offer to help them with the demolition portion of their project if you can salvage doors, flooring, fixtures and other items that will otherwise be thrown away. Obviously you will want to first see what is being removed before you offer this deal, but in many cases you can come away with great architectural pieces, antique fixtures and even hardwood floor planks that can be restored and reused in your project.
Tip #2 - Make a Deal with Demolition Companies
Demolition companies can also be a great resource for free building material. You can offer to haul away the items that you are interested in exchange for ownership of the items. This is a great option even if local demolition companies only work with commercial buildings. In fact, commercial building remodeling project can create a treasure trove of building materials that you can use from high end tiles and flooring to unique lighting fixtures and doors.
Tip #3 - Garage Sale Left Overs
After a garage sale is over many people leave what is left near the curb so that people can just take what they want for free. This is a great way to find building materials that may need a little love before it is usable. However, you can sometimes find diamonds in the rough like antique furniture that just needs to be refinished, patched or repaired.
Tip #4 - Give-away Ads
Another great source for finding free building materials for your remodel project is in the give away ads. These ads are usually published at the beginning of the classified ads. People placing these ads are trying to get someone to haul away what they consider junk so that they don't have to pay to have it hauled to the dump. You can sometimes find very interesting and bulky items like scrap lumber, bathtubs, tile lots, fixtures, plumbing, old mirrors and large furniture items. To take advantage of these deals you will need someone to help you lift the items and a vehicle that can haul the item to your home.

Post a CommentMaybe if I just worked a full time job or even worked harder I could afford to pay someone for the materials that I need or I could just go around all day helping someone demo thier house just to get some old used doors and trim. Well I better gas up my car so I can spend the next week looking for free old used toilets and doors to put in my house heck they arn't good enough for the last person but they are good enough for me!
I have had a house fire. I was able to secure a loan for a modular home; however, it is very small. I have started an addition to the side of it and will need to have it finished as an income suite as I no longer have a job. Thus the problem . . . I do not have the money to get the supplies I need. If you know of anyone who is willing to help me out with building materials, I would greatly appreciate it. i_teach_u@yahoo.com
I am in quite a pickle. I have 3 children of my own and 2 step children. My husband and I just lost our home. It is bad. But the good Lord has blessed us with another home. It's 125 years old and in not so good of shape. If there is anyone out there that can help us with any materials on remodeling we would greatly appreciate it. I'm asking for paint, sand paper, old scrap wood anything would be a blessing. To any one who even reads this I am thankful. You can contact me @ cassandratheus@yahoo.com. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Cassandra Theus & family
